Sometimes we just want to cook something in our air fryer and not heat up our whole oven. Or sometimes our oven is broken and we need another option to make a delicious dinner. Whatever the reason is, making this meal in your air fryer is really easy and achieves great results.

Chicken cordon bleu is a really simple dish to make because of how few ingredients it actually needs. In order to make this meal you will need:

  1. Chicken Breast – You need ultra thin breasts for this recipe because you are rolling them up. Most grocery stores carry thinly sliced chicken breast but if you cannot find them you can buy regular chicken breast and then use a meat pounder to make them thinner. You can also slice them in a way so that you can turn one chicken breast into two or three breasts.
  2. Swiss Cheese – you can also use gruyere cheese or jarlsberg cheese if you happen to have it.
  3. Deli Sliced Ham – I like smoked ham
  4. Panko Bread Crumbs – I buy it already seasoned
  5. Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder – to season the chicken before you roll it up.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Sauce

Chicken cordon bleu is normally paired with a creamy sauce, usually a creamy dijon mustard sauce. If you are not a huge fan of mustard but you like honey mustard, you can just serve this with honey mustard. However, if you do like dijon, I highly recommend you make the sauce below. To make the chicken cordon bleu sauce you will need:

  1. butter
  2. flour
  3. milk or half and half
  4. dijon mustard
  5. parmesan cheese
  6. garlic powder
  7. salt
  8. black pepper

INGREDIENTS  

Chicken Cordon Bleu

  • 5 Chicken Breasts ultra thin
  • 5 slices Swiss Cheese
  • 5 slices Deli Ham smoked
  • 1 cup Seasoned Panko Breadcrumbsplus additional cup if needed
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

Creamy Dijon Sauce

  • 1.5 tbsp salted butter
  • 1.5 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup milk or half and half
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 3 tbsp parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • black pepper a little dash

INSTRUCTIONS 

  • Lay your ultra thin chicken breasts on a large cutting board. Season them on both sides with the salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  • Add a slice of ham and cheese to each chicken breast and roll up the chicken You can use toothpicks to hold it in place. I keep my toothpicks on even in the air fryer.
  • Coat the chicken roll ups in panko breadcrumbs. Push the breadcrumbs into the chicken making sure to cover it completely.
  • Spray the inside basket of your air fryer with cooking oil. Place the chicken cordon blue in your air fryer basket and spray the top of the chicken with cooking oil. Cook at 390F for 25-28 minutes. Let the chicken rest of 5 minutes before cutting into it. 
  • While your chicken is cooking, make your sauce in a small saucepan on the stove. Heat the butter and when it is melted, add your flour. Using a whisk, mix the flour and butter until fully incorporated and heat on low heat for 1 minute. Add your milk and bring the heat up to medium, stirring frequently. Once the milk starts to bubble, turn off the heat, add in the dijon, cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens. It will continue to thicken as it cools too. If it gets too thick, add in a little more milk to thin it out.
