Can you cook burgers in the oven?

As much as I love the grill, I am a kitchen cook. You rarely see my grilling in the summer, even though I am pretty much obsessed with burgers and crunchy hot dogs. I CAN grill, I just don’t like standing by a grill. New Jersey summers don’t have the nicest weather. It is often too hot and humid for me to choose to cook on my grill, so I prefer the comfort of my temperature controlled kitchen.

When I want to make burgers, but I don’t want to grill, I love that there are several options to cook a juicy burger. I have used the stove top a few times to make homemade burgers, but another one of my favorite ways is to cook them right on a sheet pan in the oven. Check out my recipe for Pork and Apple Burgers and French Onion Soup Inspired Burgers. These recipes can also be made using the cooking method below.

Sheet Pan Burgers in the Oven

I place an oven safe rack on top of a large sheet pan and then cook them on that so that the bottom doesn’t get soggy from cooking in it’s own juices. The trick to making delicious burgers in the oven is knowing when to take them out. I find that for 1 lb of meat (4 evenly shaped patties) 15 minutes and not a second longer is the perfect amount of time.

Before the cooking time is over, I like to add a slice of cheese during the final minute of cooking so that the cheese gets a little melty. Then, I let the burgers rest on a cutting board for 5 minutes before piling it on a buttery brioche bun and loading it with toppings.

How to cook burgers in the oven without a rack?

I prefer to use a oven safe rack on a sheet pan to cook my burgers, however if you do not have a rack, you can place them directly on a sheet pan, or use a well-seasoned cast iron pan.

How long to cook burgers in the oven at 400F?

When I make my oven baked burgers, I cook them at 400F for 15 minutes and not a second longer. Also, if you are adding cheese, I add the burgers after 14 minutes of baking has passed so that the cheese can melt during the last minute of cooking. Also, once you remove the burgers from the oven, it is important to note that you should let the burgers rest for 5 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 4 Hamburger Buns
  • 3/4 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Minced Garlic 1-2 Garlic Cloves minced

Optional

  • 4 slices Cheese
  • Pickles
  • Red Onion
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Ketchup and Mayonnaise

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat the oven to 400F
  • Mix the ground beef in a bowl with the salt, black pepper, and garlic
  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal balls
  • Form each ball into a thin patty. Flatten the middle while keeping the sides slightly higher. This ensures that the middle does not bubble up when it is baking.
  • Cook for 15 minutes. When there is 1-2 minutes left, add one slice of cheese on top of each burger so that it can melt while the burger finishes cooking.
  • Let each burger rest for an additional 5 minutes
  • While the burger is resting, you can lightly toast your buns and cut your toppings
  • Assemble your burger to your liking
  • Optional – mix 1 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp mayonnaise together to create a creamy and delicious sauce.
