What is Margherita Pizza?

The original Margherita pizza traces its roots to Naples, where it became famous for its elegant simplicity. Legend says it was created in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, featuring ingredients that represent the Italian flag:

  • Red tomatoes
  • White mozzarella
  • Green basil

This Margherita Flatbread takes those same colors and flavors and delivers them in a faster, more approachable way, no dough proofing required. I have been using Naan or Flatbread to make pizza for years. The Naan from Trader Joe’s has a great flavor and is the perfect vessel for sauce and cheese. I love that they are small-ish and become little personal pizzas. If you want to try one of my other flatbread pizzas, try this white pizza I made using the same bread.

Why this Easy Margherita Flatbread Works So Well

1. It’s Quick

Using store-bought flatbread or naan means dinner can be ready in about 25 minutes. I buy the Indian Flatbread sold at Trader Joe’s. It comes in a 4 pack so it can make 4 individual size pizzas.

2. It’s Light Yet Satisfying

Fresh mozzarella melts beautifully without feeling heavy, and the tomatoes add brightness and natural sweetness. Adding the basil to the flatbread after it breaks ensures that the basil stays bright green and the fresh taste shines through.

3. It Highlights Quality Ingredients

This isn’t a pizza loaded with toppings. It’s all about balance—every ingredient shines. The sauce on a Margherita flatbread or pizza should not be complicated. Just some canned crushed tomatoes mixed with some spices and a little salt will keep this flatbread tasting delicious and fresh.

Tips for the Best Margherita Flatbread

  • Use fresh mozzarella for that creamy, authentic texture. Pat it dry to prevent excess moisture.
  • Don’t overload with sauce. Margherita style is all about balance.
  • Add basil after baking to keep it bright and fragrant.
