Air Fryer Sausage and Peppers
This Air Fryer Sausage and Peppers recipe is made with juicy and crispy Sweet Italian Sausage, Bell Peppers, and Onions all served on a traditional Italian roll. Making this recipe in your air fryer takes less than 30 minutes and clean up is so easy. You can even make this with Spicy Italian Sausage for a spicy kick or Chicken Italian Chicken to lighten it up.
Air Fryer Italian Sausage
I am from New Jersey and Sausage and Peppers sandwiches are super popular in this area due to the large population of Italian Americans. Growing up, anytime I went over to a friends house for a party, there was always a huge catered sheet pan full of sausage and peppers.
Right next to it would be bakery fresh Italian rolls and everyone was free to make their own little sausage and pepper sandwiches. I didn’t love peppers or onions when I was younger, but for some reason this flavor combo was just so good that I actually enjoyed them.
I used to cook Italian sausage on my stove top, but with the splatter, I find it easier to just pop it in my air fryer. Plus, I can toss my peppers and onions in my air fryer first, and then add my sausage to it. Air fryer Italian sausage is absolutely delicious, I cannot believe I never made it before. I love how crispy everything comes out, while remaining juicy inside. Also, clean up is so easy with this recipe which is a huge plus.
Air Fryer Sausage Sandwich
I live super close to a local Italian bakery so if I am making something like this, sometimes I run over to the store and pick up some fresh rolls to turn it into an Italian sausage sandwich. You can easily pick up rolls like this at a grocery store, or even use hotdog rolls.
I actually like this sandwich in a hotdog roll as it feels lighter. If you are going to use fresh Italian bread I recommend basting the bread with some garlic butter first. This ensures it does not dry out when you cut into it.
When I made this recipe I used both pork sausage and chicken sausage to see if the results were similar. And guess what? Both sandwiches are delicious. As I get older, I come across more and more people that do not eat pork, so chicken is a great option. I grew up eating pork and it is probably my favorite protein of all time, but I really have to admit that the Sweet Italian Chicken Sausage at Trader Joe’s is absolutely delicious.
Air Fryer Sausage and Potatoes
Another option for air fryer Italian sausage is to combine it with some air fryer potatoes. If you love potatoes as much as I do, you must try this recipe for Air Fryer Home Fries. Sausage would be a great addition to this dish.
You can either cook your sausage whole, slice it up, and then add it to your potatoes. Or you can slice up some sausage and add to the air fryer the same time you add your peppers and onions. It will be a bit greasier this way, so if you are looking to avoid that, I would cook the sausage first. slice it up and then add it to your potatoes once they are done cooking.
